Summer 2017

This term in Kingfishers we have begun our new topic, ‘Minibeasts’. We have enjoyed bug hunts around our mud kitchen and garden area, and have found centipedes, baby ladybirds, ants and beetles so far. We are sharing minibeast facts and story books together, and looking at similarities and differences. We have already found out lots of amazing facts- did you know that ladybirds can eat up to 50 greenflies in one day?

In Maths we have been finding out about capacity. We had lots of fun exploring what happens when a container overflows, and nearly had a very wet classroom! We are working really hard to use mathematical language such as full, half-full and empty.

Spring 2017

This week in Maths, Kingfishers have enjoyed exploring weight, using fantastic language such as ‘heavier’, ‘lighter’ and ‘balanced’ together and in play.  We have become human scales and compared the weight of toys. We have used Numicon to find different ways to balance the scales, and even measured the weight of our dinosaurs. The triceratops was very heavy…

The Reception children have also started a new ‘Talk 4 Writing’ story, Little Red Riding Hood. In Kingfishers we have used Granny’s cottage to role-play the story and cook for each other. We also had a letter from Granny when she lost her glasses, so we helped her to write a shopping list for Little Red. We also wrote fantastic lists of our own.

Autumn 2016

In Kingfishers this week, we have been exploring Room on the Broom, our Talk 4 Writing book this term. We have acted out the different characters, rescued bugs from spider webs, and solved lots of witchy problems.

On Monday the witch sent us a video, asking for help. Her favourite café had closed down, and she had nowhere to go for worm spaghetti! We thought of different solutions and decided to make a café in the classroom, with disgusting food and drink for any visiting witches and wizards.

In Maths we have been finding out about money, including different coins and their values. We have been very busy buying and selling in the Witches’ Cafe, using fantastic money language.

Phew, what a magical week!
